Cletus Mkai

Mr. Cletus Mkai, ex-Director General of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), holds a Master’s Degree in Statistics from Southampton University (UK) and post-graduate certificate in Labour Statistics from Washington DC and a BSc (Statistics) from the University of Dar es Salaam – Tanzania. His undergraduate programme was mainly in statistics but also included education, with mathematics as a teaching subject.

Mr. Mkai has over 35 years of public service working experience in a statistical organisation; about twenty of these years have been in managerial positions where he climbed the ranks to Director General at the National Bureau of Statistics.

His recent projects include directing the operations for:

  • RTI International support to the administration of School Quality Assessment for Education and WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) in Three (3) UNICEF supported Regions (Iringa, Mbeya and Njombe).
  • Baseline survey for Strengthening Education Systems East Africa (SESEA) In Southern Tanzania, Lindi Region.
  • Midline Evaluation Survey for the Tanzania Capacity and Communication Project (TCCP).The objectives for this undertaking was to examine variables such as family planning, sexual risk behaviour (including condom use and multiple and concurrent partners), maternal and child health, malaria, as well as related knowledge, attitudes, and practises.
  • JHU-CCP to conduct a quantitative assessment on the impact of BCC interventions for a campaign in Tanzania aimed at improving maternal and neonatal outcomes.
  • JHU Community Change Agent Survey to Measure the Impact of Community Change Agents in Tanzania;
  • World Bank/TWAWEZA Dar Es Salaam  Baseline and Mobile Phone Survey.
